About Us

Truly a family team; brothers, Benedict and Gavin Lane, run the cattle enterprise together.  Their wives, Sarah-Jane and Jane, have developed the sales of Salt Marsh Beef.

Both Gavin and Benedict have been involved with agriculture all their lives and work land which was originally farmed by their grandfather.

The cattle live on a farm at Terrington, Norfolk, on the banks of the River Great Ouse, one of the five rivers of the Wash Estuary.  Here they spend the summer grazing the salt marshes.  The land here is truly wild.  It is neither fertilized nor sprayed and is rich in
nutrients. The creeks run throughout making it hazardous at high tide.

The importance of grazing this landscape should not be underestimated.  Having the cattle on the marsh maintains an attractive habitat to the existing wildlife and birds.  By keeping the grass levels low wader birds such as Oystercatchers and Redshanks are able to live and feed here.  In the winter the habitat is utilized by migratory geese who feast on the marsh grasses which, without the cattle grazing, would become overgrown.
